I was given the task to make our end-of-the-day class more engaging. Being the last class of the day, the attention span is lower and the participation was not the best, since trainees were usually tired by that time. During this virtual class, the instructor recaps all the content covered during that day.
To drive participation, I decided to format the class as a Quiz, where each category would be related to a topic they saw that day. Creating a healthy competition by dividing them into two teams throughout the entire training, keeping score, and having a leaderboard at the end of the training was the cherry on top to turn this into an engaging learning experience.
Storyline Development
Since the game is also based on two teams battling against each with a leaderboard at the end, I used the same structure in the quiz. The question design was also personalized to resemble the game settings.
I was also able to customize the Feedback Master Slides by adding an animation made entirely on Storyline, using only PNG images, Motion Path, triggers, and states, as shown in the GIF below.
I used game assets such as character cards, and the possibility to add usernames to make this a more personalized experience, while still looking like a game team battle.
I achieved this by using states and variables to display each username and avatar on the question screen, as well as power-ups (a series of lifelines to aid them with the questions) that would be consumed as a team. The number of power-ups also varies according to the number of participants and this is determined by the variables I used to track it.
At the end of the week, we calculated the scores and I put together a leaderboard animation using Storyline.

Results & Takeaways
Integrating gamification into the training significantly increased participant engagement, as leaderboards and team-based competition encouraged active participation. Additionally, knowledge retention improved, with the quiz reinforcing key concepts through scenario-based learning and immediate feedback, ensuring more effective application of knowledge.
