I was responsible for creating and delivering a workshop with our internal localization agents to raise awareness and think of ways we could apply Gender Inclusive Language to our games, and discuss the challenges each language would pose.

Overview
With the goal of having more inclusive games and communicating without excluding any group, our team started applying gender-inclusive language to our games, to not discriminate against a particular sex, social gender, or gender identity and not perpetuate gender stereotypes.
Not only focusing on how to apply gender-inclusive language to gendered languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, and others where nouns and pronouns have a gender, the workshop aimed to promote tolerant and inclusive communication for all languages when adapting the English-based content.
Since I worked as a Localization agent in the past, I was able to put myself in their shoes when deciding on the workshop structure and content. I created a series of exercises and group activities using Zoom breakout rooms to map and discuss the challenges and opportunities each language would face.
I also used my graphic design background to build a fun and functional Miro board, with a cohesive and on-brand visual identity.
Results & Takeaways
Following the workshop, 84% of participants reported increased confidence in applying inclusive language to their localization work. The discussions and exercises led to the creation of revised guidelines for gender-inclusive localization, now serving as a reference across teams.
